A Bouncing Baby Boy :)

I can't believe I haven't blogged about my pregnancy yet. We've been really busy for the last couple of months, but mainly I think it's because everyone who reads this blog probably already knows our news either from word of mouth or facebook info! And it's only recently that we've had any big developments. I am so excited to be pregnant again! I'm really starting to get excited about having a boy, foreign as the concept may be for me!. Because I grew up in a house full of women...poor daddy!... (and extended family too.; only 1 boy out of 9 first cousins!) I'm just not sure what to do with a boy! :) But I know I'll have fun learning (and keep reminding myself that I'll have more energy when I'm not pregnant!).

It may sound cliche, but really all I'm really concerned with is having a healthy baby and a safe delivery for both of us. As with Rachel's pregnancy, doctor says I'm measuring large for my progress. Next week we're doing a sonogram to see if it's a big baby or too much amniotic fluid (too much fluid was the problem with Rachel). The norm for 32 weeks is about 32 centimeters (about a centimeter per week basically) and I was 36cm at 31 1/2 weeks. So he may not make it until Feb. 13th, but we'll just see how it all goes. I really don't think I'll miss the last week or two, seeing as how you get more and more uncomfortable as time goes on! We can verify that he is for sure head down too, though dr. says he can tell by feel.

I am very excited to have another sonogram though! I love those! It's so much fun to see the baby with your own eyes and know that everything is a-ok. Not that I don't know he's here...he's an active little sucker! Sometimes it feels like he's doing jumping jacks in my abdomen, kicking both arms and legs at the same time! Hopefully we'll have a new picture to post too.

Rachel has been too cute about the new baby (or "baybay" as she pronounces it!). She'll lay her head on my belly and give it kisses and tell him "night night". Don't know if she'll feel the same once the baby is home (she'll probably be thinking, "why'd you bring this loud, squirmy thing home?" much like Max reacted when we brought Rachel home!). But it'll be a time of adjustment for all of us. Joshua's job will be to keep Rachel as happy as possible! I never did mind the late night feedings much though. It's amazing how you can be incredibly groggy when the alarm goes off at 6am, but can operate so nimbly at 3am for a baby! I saw a lot of infomercials while feeding Rachel and would get excited to see something like Happy Days on! Saw a lot of lumberjack competitions too...

One thing I'm definitely looking forward to is having the experience of having done this before. It's not qute so scary going into the hospital because you at least know what to expect. Even though you know the possibility exists that problems could occur, it's still not so bad as it is the first time. And I'm so glad I'm a breastfeeding veteran this time around too! That was the most stressful part of my stay in the hospital with Rachel because we had so much trouble finding someone either 1)competent; 2) a lactation specialist that wasn't ready to leave because it was 4:30pm on a Friday; or 3)a nurse willing to take the time to actually teach me what to do (seriously...I had a nurse get kinda rude with us...I was in tears thinking I was going to be going home with a baby that would starve because I couldn't feed it, and a sleep-deprived husband who was about to lose it with the nursing staff! The labor and delivery nurses were amazing, but the postpartum staff needed some work, and thank God for the one nurse that was helpful! She was truly a Godsend). As Joshua described it, it's like teaching two people to do something when neither speaks the same language! At least this time one of us knows what she's doing!

Ok, now that I've spilled the beans per se, I can blog about baby boy updates, though really there hasn't been much to report lately. Which reminds me...in a non-problematic pregnancy, dr. visits are incredibly boring! I have an awesome doctor, but I drive almost 45 minutes for a five minute appt! Or maybe I'm just not a high maintenance patient; let's hope he appreciates that in about 6 weeks! But I do get to hear his little heartbeat at each appt and that's always special. :)

Hope you're all having a wonderful Christmas! I should have more pictures coming soon!

WooHoo! Looks Who's Two!!

I know...I'm posting on this really late, but it's been getting harder and harder to find the time and energy to blog with the holidays and all that that entails (I should be wrapping gifts right now in fact). I really and truly can't believe that Rachel is already 2 years old! She's grown so much! She's definitely in her 2s now also...when told to do stop doing something, we get a lot of attitude and palms-out hands (I thought all that didn't come until she's a teenager! go figure). I just have to keep reminding myself that this too shall pass and it has to get better eventually....right? Someone tell me the behavior will change for the better! :)

Rachel got treated to two birthday parties and three birthday desserts. That's apparently what happens when your birthday falls on Thanksgiving weekend and everyone travels!
Her first celebration was at my parents house in Little Rock. I made a chocolate ganache cake with a raspberry filling...turned out better than I'd expected!

On the day of her birthday, Daddy said she needed to blow out candles on something, so I made us some brownies and she blew out two candles on her brownie. She LOVES blowing out candles, birthday or otherwise.

Then the weekend after Thanksgiving we had Joshua's family over for cake too. Peanut butter cake this time, where again she had a blast blowing out candles and eating more sugary goodness!

So what keeps a two year old busy? Here's some evidence.

She loves "helping" me out in the kitchen, so whenever I can I try to let her "help" me with certain projects (trouble is she wants up at the counter every time I do Anything in the kitchen which isn't always possible, and then there is much moaning and wailing and gnashing of teeth).

Why the bucket you may ask? You'll have to ask her; it was all her idea!

She would not be satisfied until I had All of her hair up in curlers (they were, of course, not heated).

This was the day we got back from Arkansas...I think she'd had enough pictures for a while! Good practice for the papparazzi one day I suppose.

Playing, playing, and playing....

...and being silly! Her favorite thing of all to do!

Busy Busy Thanksgiving

As the title suggests, we had a very busy Thanksgiving, but a highly rewarding one too! We traveled to visit family in central Arkansas to celebrate Thanksgiving, 3 birthdays, and one anniversary. The weather couldn't have been better; crisp and cool and sunny. I'll just start with pictures and narrate as I go along.

While staying with my family, Rachel's favorite activity was carrying around her purse and "shopping" for items found in my sister's room! She especially loved this beaded curtain that separates the sleep area from her sitting room and closet.
My dad surprised us with a new firepit in their backyard and we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows for dinner Wednesday night. Rachel loved it, saying "whoah" a lot! We had so much fun and it was one of the more special parts of our visit :)
Rachel had fun banging around on my dad's piano too. She sways like Stevie Wonder while she plays too! I see lessons in her future....

We also celebrated my mom's, dad's, and Rachel's birthdays, all of which fall between Nov. 28th and Dec. 4th. She got her first real doll, Miss Raggedy Ann.
Rachel still takes some warming up with people she doesn't see often, but once she lets go of her stranger anxiety she's all smiles, hugs, and kisses! Here she is getting reacquainted with her great-granddad.

Not an hour before this picture she had a death grip on Joshua, and now she's offering dessert to Great-Granddad!

After lunch we took a walk in the woods around the house; if only we could all travel like Rachel does with her own personal escort!

I couldn't believe my grandmother had blooms on her hydrangea bush! Must be all the rain and warm-ish weather the last month or so.

On Friday we traveled down to Hot Springs to celebrate Joshua's grandparents' 65th wedding anniversary! They are still such a sweet and loving couple! They didn't know until that morning that all their kids and almost all their grandkids and great-grandkids were coming to celebrate! Relatives traveled from north Texas, south Texas, and Georgia, and Nana and Papa are totally worth it! :) (tshirts courtesy of Rebekah...very cute!)
Rachel posed for a few pictures and hugs...here with cousin Suzi...

...kisses for Nana...

...and hugs for cousin Rebekah. Somehow Rachel can find the youngest person in the room, and she latches on to them, taking them by the hand and dragging them from room to room showing them things. In this case, Rebekah was the lucky victim and cookies in the pantry were her destination!

The night before we left, Rachel watched one last movie with her Aunt Lydia (she is quite the movie watcher lately). She watched the first 30 minutes of this movie with her arm around Lydia like this...it was too cute!

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving too! I'm ready for a nap now! :)

Look What I Can Do!

Rachel has learned a new acrobatic skill, and all on her own too! She just started doing it while playing around the other day.

Lazy Days

Miss Rachel does enjoy her movies! Some of her favorites are Shrek, Toy Story, and the Jungle Book (this includes all sequels too). Her one constant is that she likes movies with minimal human characters; she'd much rather watch animals, monsters, or toys than real people (once tried to get her to watch Mary Poppins...that was a mistake!). I've saved up a few shots we got of her watching movies in various states of repose.

This must be comfortable for babies and kids because you find them like this a lot!
We can't keep clothes on her much anymore, but apparently she does get chilly at times; we found her like this all on her own.

Watching movies with Daddy is always more fun!

Here are some portraits we had taken last weekend. I love the dress she's wearing (too bad you can't see the super cute red patent leather shoes she has on!); it's my bargain of the season from a local resale shop :)

Happy Halloween!

Rachel enjoyed this year's Halloween much more so than last year. We went to her aunt and uncle's house for some pre-trick or treating fun, namely some pumpkin carving and a little barbecue (not to mention watching the Hogs whoop up on Eastern Michigan too!).
Helping Daddy with the jack 'o lantern. She was really intrigued by its smell; she kept smelling it over and over again.
Apple cake w/caramel icing...that's what Fall tastes like! :)
We used an Easter dress that my mom got her earlier this year and spruced it up with some fancy princess accessories. I even went all out and made her a matching purple feather-lined cape, which she quickly decided she did NOT want to wear! But we did get some good pictures of her in it even if she didn't keep it on long. I think the feathers from the boa may have poked her arms a little and made it uncomfortable to wear.
I put together a very quick gypsy outfit and Joshua had a Teddy Roosevelt/civil war soldier kind of thing going on with the beard (he also had suspenders but just hadn't put them on yet for the photo)
It only took one house for her to learn that it was really cool to go up and get candy from the people inside! And our excursion took a bit longer because every single time she got candy, she ran to her daddy and grandmom, put down her wand, opened up her bag, and showed them the candy she got at each house! She was so excited and in disbelief that every time someone gave her "num nums"! I never could get her to say "trick or treat" but every so often she got out a "num num please."
Showing off her candy
So can anyone tell my why people leave their front porch lights on on Halloween night if they don't plan to be home (especially in this neighborhood with garages in the back at the alley)? One of the last houses we went to had the lights on, but no one ever answered the door. I told Rachel they must have gone "bye bye". But then I thought I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, that maybe they were just "in the potty". That led to her running to her daddy, point to the house, and then point to the front of her diaper (her way of saying she needs to go potty)! It was hilarious! She did it about four or five times, telling him that the people inside were on the potty in that anxious kind of whine/grunt (unh! nuh!) that kids do before they can really talk but have something really important to say...it was too funny!
Rachel LOVES the Shrek movies (think it's the music and Donkey), so she was quite impressed when this little boy answered the door in his Shrek mask

Hope you all had a fun and safe Halloween this year too!

Miss Mischievous

This is why I get nervous when she's too quiet for too long! Thank goodness crayons are non-toxic and washable!

A Sneak Peek at Halloween

Since Rachel can still fit into her lavender Easter dress, we're transforming it into a Princess costume. I'm making her a cape that should be pretty fun and dazzling (you'll have to wait until after the 31st to see it though).

Here she is trying on her tiara (the earrings didn't stay on long, though I don't blame her...clip ons are not comfortable)
And what's a princess without a sparkly, noisy wand!

And here she is taking care of Max. The other day the battery on one of our smoke alarms was low and it was chirping every few minutes, something that Max does not take kindly to. He gets the shakes and glues himself to the closest seated human.

Is It Cloudy and Rainy Where You Are?

My best guess is yes, it is! It's been cooler and rainier than usual for north Texas this fall (and the region in general), and I am loving it! It's always bugged me that autumn never really gets here until about mid-November, and winter not until about January. But it looks like that will be a little different this year, so I'm enjoying it while I can! The only downside has been that Rachel hasn't been able to get out and play much outside. So we take advantage of the dry spells when we can.

Rachel loves her pullover hoodies. I got her all bundled up to go to the park last Friday even though it was cloudy and in the low 50s. The swings are her favorite; she wasn't very happy that she didn't get to climb on the jungle gym, but it was just too wet and dirty.
Here she is at her grandparents' house (they babysat while Joshua and I saw "Zombieland" this weekend...very good movie if you have the stomach for it!). This is her all of a sudden noticing her hospital baby picture on the wall and yelling "baby!" If there's a baby within ten feet of her lately, she finds it!
Getting some sage advice from her Papa T
On the drive over she decided she wanted to wear this pullover but couldn't get it on properly with the carseat straps in the way, so she improvised! (in the 2 earlier photos she'd taken off her original shirt and put this on instead)
A rare moment when she let me put her hair in a ponytail and left it up for more than 5 seconds! She looks so much older to me when her hair is up.
I put her in this sun dress the other day because I figured the days that it's warm enough to wear it are numbered so I took advantage.

Here's Max reluctantly letting her get in some hugs.
This is what she does now when I tell her to smile for the camera!
Coloring with an audience (this is her other hoodie that I can't get her out of! They're really soft, that must be why she likes them)

She climbed into this cooler the other day without actually opening it up, but rather squeezing into the zippered convenience pocket!

Hey! Where did Rachel go??? :) She did this herself the other day.
